Blur plus an SVG goo filter fuses the two words while they cross. The filter has to live in the document — a few lines of SVG, inlined here. Its own blur stays small: the effect's CSS blur does the spreading while the words cross, and the alpha threshold turns that haze into one fused shape, so the settled word keeps its counters. Without the filter you still get a clean blur crossfade, just not the fusion.
The class is wm wm-meld — the first half is the marker the trigger and reduced-motion rules hook into, the second is the effect.
